Sunder (
Casting Sequence[]
The incantation for Sunder is visually and structurally similar to Rend, another anime-only technique. The god "charges" the divine weapon by running their index and middle fingers along the weapon. Once cast with the incantation, the god strikes the target using the divine weapon. The target's bonds, represented by white strings, are cut by the weapon.[1]
我 、「夜 ト 神 」来 たり降 り、この縁 「雪 器 」を以 って、断 ち切 らん!ーー絶 !
(Original text in Japanese)
Ware, [Yatogami] kitariori, kono enishi [Sekki] wo motte, tachikiran! Zetsu!
(Romaji transcription)
Hear me! I am the god [Yato]! I hereby sever ties! [Sekki], sunder!
(Official English dub)
Usages[]
- Yato and Yukine use Sunder to sever the emotional ties between Yusuke Urasawa and Kofuku.[1]
Adaptation Notes[]
- Although the principle behind this ability exists in the manga, the manga does not title the technique or require an incantation.
- For example, in Noragami Stray Stories, when Yato and Yukine sever the bonds between Yusuke and Kofuku, he does so without use of the Sunder casting sequence.[2]
- Similarly, Yato uses Tomone to sever the ties between Mutsumi and her classmates[3] and tricks Daikoku into believing he severed his bond with Daigo.[4] In both cases, he does not perform the Sunder casting sequence.
Trivia[]
- Yato is the only god seen performing Sunder or the equivalent technique in the manga. It is not directly specified whether this technique is unique to Yato, but according to Tenjin, it is Yato's specialty.[5]
