First contact[]

Kagutsuchi's shinki, their names cracked by Liberation.
On first contact with Chiki's weapon form, a shinki's name will usually break or chip. The extent of the damage is implied to depend on the length and point of contact,[1][2] as well as Chiki's own condition[1][3] and the willpower of her opponent.[4] The shinki will appear dazed or shocked, while the master will experience pain as if they have been stung, usually coughing up blood or bleeding from the nose.[2][3]
The shinki will not remember their past immediately, appearing fine for the first few days.[3]
Worsening[]
Eventually, the shinki's state will begin to worsen and they become stuck in their pasts.[3] This affliction is infectious.[5] Tsuguha, one of Bishamon's shinki, was hit by Chiki while at Iki General Hospital. She dreams of her past in snippets, slowly remembering more and more, not understanding that what she's seeing are memories of her past life. Her condition seems to temporarily improve and Bishamon notes that her symptoms are "inconsistent."[6] She is shown to be sleeping a lot.[7]
Name shatters[]

Tsuguha's name breaks.
Eventually, the shinki will remember their death and the God's Greatest Secret will be revealed, shattering their given shinki name and turning them into karma ayakashi.[8] In their grief and anger, they will turn on their master, devouring them unless they are killed.[3]
