Story (Manga)[]
Yukine Arc[]
Hiyori starts off with narrating and recounts the tale of a girl who wished she wasn't bullied and how the girl discovered a mysterious phone number on the wall with the message, "I will solve all your problems." She tells of how the girl couldn't take her eyes off the message and decided to call the number. After Yato saves the girl, Hiyori begins narrating again and compares him to the likes of the ayakashi, noting that he isn't much different since with him being as unknown as he is, his life is rather precarious. The chapter ends with Hiyori mentioning that soon, he would meet her.[1]
Hiyori is introduced walking around the city with her friends Akira Yamashita and Aimi Tabata. The two stumble across a missing cat poster and they are commenting on the cats name, Milord. Yama and Ami begin arguing about gods and idols when they ask Hiyori for her opinion. She then opens up about her wrestling obsession and how she is obsessed with wrestler, Touno-sama.

She falls back into an imaginary scenario/memory of her mother’s expectations of her and of being a “proper lady” and finding an exceptional husband. Just as she thinks to herself on how she doesn’t have a crush on any boy, a boy in a tracksuit passes by her, the two of them catching each other’s gaze. The man in the tracksuit runs across the street when he sees Milord, but fails to see a bus racing towards him. Hiyori pushes him out of the way, sacrificing herself for him. They sit up and she begins to scold him for not paying better attention to traffic. That’s when he points out something behind her, it was her unconscious physical body.
Hiyori wakes in a hospital bed dazed and confused. Her mother and friends surround her and are calling out for her relieved that she is awake. Her father comes in and conducts a quick exam ensuring that she is fine. She then asks about the boy which everyone denies there being another person there with her, but she adamantly believes he was there.
Hiyori begins hearing voices from the Far Shore.
At night, Hiyori is sitting in bed hearing different voices, when she hears someone asking her what they are. Looking down, the boy in the tracksuit is laying under the covers, on her lap. She runs out of the bed and jumps on the couch terrified. She realizes its the boy she saved. She asks for his name, which he refuses stating that he doesn’t want to form ties with her. He mentions to her about physical changes she might notice, but quickly changes the subject, happy that she was safe. He leaves before she could ask once more who he was.
Hiyori returns to school and is swarmed by students asking about her incident which she apologizes for worrying people. She goes to class and notices that it still feels like she’s dreaming and begins thinking about the accident. She recalls a cat but nothing more, the accident had become a fuzzy memory. She is walking around town with her friends when they mention how unsteady she looks. She says it’s because she’s been really sleepy. They walk past a missing cat poster and the memories begin slowly coming back of the accident, she recalls someone chasing the cat. Hiyori begins calling out the cats name and her friends joke that she must be sleep-talking. She waves them off and begins wondering the streets calling out for the cat.
Her memory of the accident is still hazy and she hopes that by finding the cat she could remember everything. She comments on feeling sleepy and then notices a peculiar smell…
The tracksuit man is in the middle of a battle fighting ayakashi when someone grabs his hand and pulls him away. It is Hiyori. Something overcomes her when she looks at the monster and begins threatening it as her adrenaline takes over. She gets grabbed but is able to kick the monster with one of Tono-Sama’s signature moves, Jungle Savate. She is able to defeat the ayakashi and then begins thanking Tono-Sama, almost in a prayer like gesture. Hiyori looks over at the boy and begins asking him questions about the event when he points out that she has separated from her body, and her physical body is hanging over a fence.

Hiyori freaks out and asks if she’s dead, to which he responds that she is sleeping and pathetically reassures that it’s temporary. He presumes that she is able to slip in-and-out of her body due to the accident and that she has become a living ayakashi. He then begins to explain that some day she could learn to control this ability and be able to jump in and out of her body whenever she wants. But all she asks in return is how she can fix it. He responds that he doesn’t know and Hiyori panics telling him that she doesn’t want this, and that she wants to become normal again. She suddenly passes out and falls back into her body.
Hiyori wakes up to find that the track-suit boy is carrying her on his back. She jumps off him and begins threatening to call the police. He tells her he is a god and when he looks back at her she is on the phone with he police. He calls her by her name which makes her hang up and ask him how he knows her name. He flips a coin and tells her that her prayer has been heard. She asks him what his name is and he responds with Yato. In narration, Hiyori recounts that this is how her fate became tied to Yato.[2]
Hiyori wakes up in her spirit form on her bed. She looks down at her body and notices that her body has gone through some changes ever since the accident. She is suddenly woken up by her teacher calling her name and Hiyori realizes that she is at school, sitting at her desk. Her teacher tells her that if she isn’t feeling good to go to the nurses office and makes mention that she is falling asleep too often in class. Hiyori quickly apologizes.
While they are changing in the locker room, Hiyori sees a small ayakashi hiding under a stool when one of her classmates sits down on the seat and continues to change. She emphasizes that no one can see these creatures and that ayrakashi inhabit the blind spots where people don’t typically look and continues on explaining what exactly they are. She asks herself why it had to happen to her and why she had to be the one to be able to see them.
The scene changes and she and her class-mates are on the track about to start the 800m dash. After the coach yells go, Hiyori immediately collapses. Her class-mates run around her asking what happened, when Hiyori’s spirit self jumps up and exclaims that she couldn’t be asleep. Hiyori becomes frustrated by the event, especially when two boys notice that her underwear is showing. Suddenly, she is once again back in her body, laying in the nurse’s office. The nurse tells her that school is over and Hiyori promptly changes and leaves.

Outside, Hiyori begins to feel conflicted about fixing herself. As much as she wants to return to normalcy, a part of her really likes how light she feels when her spirit is out. She leaves her body and is walking on a telephone wire smiling and thinking to herself that this life could be fun.
After some brief time has passed, Hiyori is seen back in her body when she decides to call Yato. He answers asking how he can help her, when she exclaims that it’s been two weeks since she’s made her wish. He says he’ll handle it and she becomes impatient with his answer of always saying “soon” and never fixing her now. Yato comes up with an excuse that he has more important things and Hiyori openly doubts that if Yato is even really a god. Yato suddenly appears in front of her, surprising her, and defends that he is in fact, a god. Hiyori asks what makes him any different than an ayakashi. Yato explains that it’s because he is from the Far Shore and that he is a warrior god, he was born from wishes. He then compares her to an ayakashi when he points out that her physical body was laying on the sidewalk. Hiyori panics while Yato laughs calling her ghost. He warns her that her falling in-and-out of her body is dangerous and that with her being alive, things will come after her and devour her soul; this could cause someone to turn evil. He continues warning her that it is a line she shouldn’t cross. Fearful, Hiyori asks if he can fix her now and he yells out that he will. She asks him yet again when he will fix her and he replies that once he gets a shinki he should be able to. He explains that a Shinki is a spirit that becomes a divine weapon, a spirit of the dead.
Suddenly his phone rings and before Hiyori gets the chance to stop him, he disappears. Hiyori is left sitting there, back in her physical body, wondering if Yato is all talk. She thinks back to a memory of her mother pointing to a television with a young Hiyori in her lap warning her how the men on the screen are “worthless human beings” and Hiyori wonders if Yato is one of them. Before thinking of defeat, she suddenly gets a burst of confidence when she thinks back onto a quote from Touno-sama, “If you want something done, you have to use your own two fists.” Hiyori begins scouring the streets asking ayakashi and any other supernatural spirits if they would be interested in becoming a Shinki.
Hours pass and it is now night-time. Yato is found sleeping in one of Tenjin’s shrines thinking about Hiyori and her predicament when he receives a phone-call from her. He answers begrudgingly and she says that she found him a shinki.

Yato suddenly appears in front of her and she points over to a giant ayakashi asking if it would make a good candidate. Yato yells out that they need to run and they begin to do so. Hiyori is confused why they are running and why the creature isn't considered a potential shinki. He explains the difference between the two when Hiyori decides to bring up that she dropped her body.
Hiyori gets ready to attack the ayakashi.
The ayakashi tries to snatch her but she jumps upwards, barely dodging its jaws, and quickly remembers that she is actually very strong in spirit form. However, before she can even fight, Yato pulls on her tail, seemingly electrifying her. She falls to the ground and the two manage to escape. They’re walking down an avenue when Hiyori notices his hand, he warns her not to touch it and that she’ll catch what he calls, the blight, as well. He explains that it’s contagious and you have to purify it if you want to expel it. Hiyori also learns that her tail is what tethers her spirit to her body, a life-line, and that if it gets cut she’ll die.
The ayakashi reappears and they begin running away once more. The two begin trivially arguing about her not fighting and that she was only trying to help when Yato notices something out of the corner of his eye. Hiyori watches as Yato recites the words needed to claim a spirit as a shinki, and the spirit transforms into a sword. The ayakashi approaches and she watches stunned as Yato easily slices it in half, destroying the beast. She watches Yato fall onto the street, and peering over from a rooftop she wonders to herself if she really saw him crying or if it had been her imagination. Hiyori rejoins him at Tenjin’s shrine and sees him purifying the blight with the cleansed waters, the blight disappears and she is surprised by how quickly it heals. She quickly turns her attention to his new Shinki and Yato introduces him as Yuki, but his true name being Yukine. The sword suddenly transforms into a young teen boy with blonde hair and Hiyori yells out in surprise that the sword is actually a human being. Yuki asks to borrow Hiyori’s scarf after refusing Yato’s track jacket which Hiyori kindly hands over.[3]
Hiyori meets up with Yato and Yukine at a diner, having promised to pay for their food in exchange for Yato fixing her. The waitress comes up and sets a glass of water instructing Hiyori how to order when Yato interrupts her and asks for two more glasses of water. Hiyori becomes confused because she thought no one could see them. Yato explains that since he and Yukine are in between the Near and Far Shores, they’re just hard to notice. He then asks her how many waitresses there are, Hiyori guesses two. When she looks around she actually sees that there’s four. He further emphasizes that he and Yukine blend into the background. Hiyori watches them eat and agrees that she does feel a distance between her and the two boys. She wonders if that is the divide between the near-and-far shore.
After lunch, Yukine and Hiyori are waiting outside when Yukine mentions that even though he just ate a lot, he feels like he hasn’t eaten at all, agreeing with Yato’s comment from earlier. He thanks her lunch. She introduces herself to him officially. Yukine asks why she hangs around Yato and she talks about her predicament with her body and that he’s going to fix her.
Hiyori wonders how Yukine died.
She then asks how he became Yato’s shinki. Yukine explains that he doesn’t actually know, all he remembers was that he was suddenly there. He knows that he is dead but he doesn’t remember his life before. Hiyori thinks back to the night and she remembers seeing Yato crying on the street, she wonders why.
Suddenly, Yato appears exclaiming that he and Yukine have a job. Hiyori is shocked and feeling scammed from lunch, she yells after Yato and Yukine but they disappear, and her body falls to the ground. Hiyori’s soul though goes with the two boys and they appear in a mysterious courtyard surrounded by shrouded hooded figures. A mysterious scholar figure appears reciting a poem and Hiyori gasps realizing she is in the presence of Tenjin-Sama, the god of learning. Yukine and Hiyori bow down before him completely awestruck. The god is impressed that she knows his poetry and she exclaims that it’s in her textbooks.
Tenjin begins to focus on Yukine and when a group of women step forward explaining that Yukine bowing before a god is disrespectful, especially in front of his master; Hiyori comments on how many priestesses Tenjin has, but he states that they are actually his shinki.
After Tenjin and Yato talk about the job and Yato agrees, Tenjin sends out one of his newest shinki, Mayu, to help them. Yato is shocked to learn that Mayu is in fact his previous shinki, Tomone. The four of them are seen walking along the street, with Yato walking at a distance from them. Mayu is explaining that she was once Yato’s shinki. Hiyori asks how it was working with him, Mayu responds by telling them to draw their own conclusions. Seemingly already knowing the answer, Yukine and Hiyori groan in disappointment.
They arrive at the site of the job, a train crossing, and Mayu finally explains the job, it is over the suicides of people that were written about in an ema. Hiyori is in disbelief and is sad as Mayu continues to explain that this place is a very stormy place where people’s dark intentions tend to get the best of them when Hiyori realizes with newfound determination and hope that all they need to do is stop the ayakashi that are possessing people.
Yato calls out her name and she asks if he wants to do something about it which he says no, if they want to die, they should die. Hiyori questions his blunt statement and he explains that a soul that has resorted to killing itself has already given into evil, it’s unable to become a shinki, so whether they are alive or dead, there’s no point in saving them. Hiyori asks that isn’t it his job to save people. He asks why she’s so worked up.
As a train passes, Hiyori jumps over it. She is standing on the roof of a building looking out over the train station. She is monologuing to herself about how incredulous Yato had been. How no one should give up on someone, how even her father would never abandon his patients, even if they tried to end it themselves. There is a man standing at the platform reading a book with a small ayakashi sitting on his shoulder. She jumps down and kicks the ayakashi from the man’s shoulder, while at the same time calling Yato the worst. When she stands and gets a sense of her surroundings she notices just how full the train station is with ayakashi. They surround her, saying they will bring her to their side. They swarm her, pushing her to the edge of platform near the tracks. She is pushed off the platforms and is wrapped in seemingly bandages of an ayakashi as a train nears.
Just then, Yato appears with Yuki in his hand, he slashes down on the bandages freeing Hiyori. He yells out for her to jump and she does, landing on the roof of the train. She is catching her breath, but manages to get out his name, surprised that he’s there. He tells her to stay put. She watches from the roof of the train as Yato slashes through the ayakashi.
Hiyori cries when she realizes that shinki had all wanted to live.
Hiyori wakes up in the hospital. Her parents surrounding her telling her that she passed out again. She sits up suddenly recounting the day in her mind, remembering that she had almost died. She thinks back onto why Yato said what he said, and on his actions when she finally understands why. Shinki are people who had died when they still wanted to live. She finally understands that Yato could never forgive someone for wanting to throw their lives away, especially in front of people like Yukine and Mayu.[4]
Hiyori and Yukine are watching Yato replace a tire. Hiyori thinks to herself how she is impressed that Yato actually work and that it is good honest work. After fixing the tire, Yato receives a parcel of food from an old woman and Hiyori comments how generous it was of her to give that to him, Yato stubbornly replies that he is only sharing with Yukine and not with her. She admires how well he takes care of Yukine and that she should put more faith into him. As they are leaving Hiyori catches Yukine talking to the old man and cons the man into giving them a 10000 yen bill in which Yukine takes it without hesitation.
The trio is sitting in a train station, Hiyori is standing, watching Yukine and Yato eat when Yato notices something under the bench. He snatches an ayakashi and tells Yukine that he wants to teach him how to draw a border. Hiyori watches as Yato explains the procedure and is amazed when Yukine successfully draws one up on his first try. Hiyori asks Yato if he can, and he explains that drawing borders is a power reserved to shinki alone. Yukine gets excited and leaves the train station, Hiyori notices and follows after him asking what he's going to do with the money he took from the old man an whether or not he'll give it to Yato or give it back. Yukine retorts saying that maybe she would understand if she tried dying for once before leaving. Hiyori walks back into the train station glumly where Yato notices her walk in. She thinks to herself as she sits down next to Yato that Yukine is dead and he doesn't have anyone, and that maybe she was being insensitive. Yato suddenly interrupts her thoughts, yelling about how gross the color of something is.
Yato and Hiyori are still sitting at the train station when Yato yells out in pain. She asks him what's wrong and he answers saying Yukine stung him. Hiyori becomes worried for Yato but he explains that Yukine just let the darker side of himself take over. Yato notices immediately that Yukine has been gone for awhile and Hiyori suggests that maybe he went into town. Yato asks why he would do that since he has no money and Hiyori lies wondering what he might be up. Hiyori decides to go look for him and leaves.
It's night time now, Hiyori finds Yukine and a little girl sitting on a desolate bench. She tells the little girl that she's here to take Yukine home and comments that both her and Yato have been worried about him. Yukine states that he can take care of himself and that there's no point in worrying since he's already dead. The little girl interrupts them saying that when her mom gets here she can give the two of them a ride home. Yukine, disheartened, mutters that she won't be coming. The little girl starts crying and gets up, walking away towards the shadows. Yukine follows after her trying to stop her and Hiyori tries stopping him.
Hiyori suddenly jumps out of her physical body when she notices all the ayakashi swarming the little girl and goes to try to protect her. She yells out at Yukine to draw a border in which he does, but he only draws a border between the ayakashi and himself and the little girl, leaving Hiyori on the side with the ayakashi. He seemingly ignores Hiyori's cries for help. When the little girl transforms into an ayakashi Hiyori is able to cross over and grab Yukine before escaping from the monster.
She takes him to a lonely bus stop and when he wakes she reassures him telling him that the ayakashi didn't get him anywhere. When he asks about the little girl she apologizes in failing to save her, he brushes it off saying she was dead anyways.
The two are walking back to the train station and Yukine makes her promise that she won't tell Yato what happened. Yukine blows off Yato saying he probably didn't look for him, Hiyori plays devil's advocate claiming he probably just waited for him at the train station in case he came back. When they enter and she sees Yato sleeping on a bench she punches him in the face furious that he didn't look for him. The two begin arguing about Yato's mismanagement and lack of care towards Yukine and Hiyori even takes back her earlier praises about Yato claiming she was wrong for ever believing in him. She suddenly announces that she will take care of Yukine from now on. Yato argues with her furiously about how bad of an idea that is and how more likely Yukine is prey to fall to his darker side due to staying with a woman. Hiyori offers her hand to Yukine while Yato is continuously disagreeing with the idea. But Yukine ultimately decides to go with Hiyori leaving Yato a wreck.[5]

Hiyori is first shown walking with her friends Aimi and Yama and come across a 'missing' poster for Milord and talk about how people can give weird names to their pets, which leads to them discussing about people they think is more god-like. Hiyori is somewhat distracted, as she watches her idol, Touno, defeat his opponent in a boxing match using Jungle Savate.[6]
