Hiyori Iki ( () () ひより Iki Hiyori?) is the main female protagonist of the ノラガミ Noragami series. She is a half-ayakashi ( (はん) (よう) hanyou?) whose spirit can temporarily leave her human body.

Appearance[]

Hiyori is a young girl of slender build, whose height is 167 cm (5' 6") .[citation needed] She has dark brown hair and brown eyes (magenta in the anime). As a half-ayakashi, a "cord" resembling a cat's tail emerges from her lower back. The cord is colored dark pink in the anime;[2] its coloring in the manga is inconsistent, at times appearing gray,[3] light brown,[4] or bright pink.[5]

Hiyori is often seen wearing her middle school uniform, which consists of a short sailor shirt and a knee-length skirt, both lavender in the anime and light gray in the manga. Once she graduates middle school, she is frequently seen wearing both the summer and winter versions of her high school uniform. Her winter high school uniform consists of a light purple blazer, a dark purple pleated skirt, and a black button up shirt with a purple ribbon at the collar. She wears black knee length socks and brown loafer shoes with this outfit. She can sometimes be seen wearing the blazer open with a white sweater vest underneath it. Her summer uniform also has a white sweater vest, along with a short-sleeved blue collared shirt, a dark purple pleated skirt, and the same socks and shoes as her winter uniform.

Hiyori changes outfits on occasion, donning a grey trench coat over the uniform and wearing a long pink scarf over her shoulders reaching down to her upper thighs during the first season, which took place in winter, and more summer outfits in the second season.

Personality[]

Hiyori is a kind-hearted and brave individual who will go out of her way to help someone in danger, even if she does so at risk to her own safety. This extends not only to her loved ones,[6][7][8] but also to strangers.[9] She has a strong moral compass and is usually willing to speak out against others if she feels their actions are wrong,[10][7] although she has shown herself to be slightly more lenient at times when the matter concerns a friend.[6] She is very perceptive of those around her, able to see good intentions behind others' seemingly cruel words or actions.[10] Despite this, Hiyori can be a bit air-headed or naive; for example, believing she would be fully prepared to be Yukine's caretaker,[6] or being comically concerned that she isn't "wireless" when she learns that her cutting her cord could result in her death.[11] She is also rather easily flustered when confronted with matters of romance.[12][13]

Hiyori is deeply loyal to those she trusts and does not subdue her emotions. Though she wishes to be completely human again,[9] Hiyori has no desire to sever her ties with Yato or Yukine, and refuses to do so several times even though it would be her best chance to return to normal.[14][12]

Despite expecting disapproval from her mother for being unladylike, Hiyori is a huge fan of martial arts. She has a fixation on a martial artist called Touno, who she adores and copies attacks from.[9] She often becomes inspired and act on his words, following his advice of "pave [their] destiny with their own hands".[11]

Skills & Abilities[]

  • Half-ayakashi Transformation: Hiyori's soul is able to slip out of her body, leaving her physical body asleep. This means her existence lies somewhere between an ayakashi and a living human.[9]
    • Although Hiyori can activate this phenomenon at will, sometimes her spirit leaves her body behind without realizing it.[11]
    • Hiyori's cord is only present in her half-ayakashi form and takes the appearance of a cat-like tail. This cord acts as a lifeline that connects her physical and spirit forms. She will die if it is severed, and crushing or tugging on it causes her extreme pain.[9] Her cord can also disappear if she spends a long time outside of her physical body.[15]

Hiyori is more nimble as a half-ayakashi than as a human.

  • Physical Combat: In her half-ayakashi form, Hiyori acquires enhanced strength, speed, and agility. Along with the martial arts she has learned, she is able to hold her own in the fight against large ayakashi.[9] However, her fighting abilities are limited so that her cord won't be damaged.
    • Jungle Savate (ジャングル・サバット Janguru sabatto?): The Jungle Savate is a martial arts technique that Hiyori learned from watching videos of Touno.[9]
  • Clairalience: As a half-ayakashi, Hiyori possesses a very strong sense of smell for beings of the Far Shore. She is able to pick up a god or shinki's scent and discern between individuals, even across long distances.[16]
  • Supernatural Senses: Unlike most humans, Hiyori can perceive creatures from the Far Shore. She inherited this ability to a certain degree from her maternal family.[17] Even before becoming a half-ayakashi, she is able to see gods. She gains the ability to see shinki, loose spirits, and ayakashi after the change.[9]
  • Memory Reading: Hiyori seems to have the ability to look into the memories of others. She unintentionally uses this ability to look into Yato's memory of his childhood.[18] However, the origin of this ability has not been explained yet.

Trivia[]

  • The name Hiyori is homophonous to the term " () (より) " meaning "fair weather". This forms sort of a theme with Yato and Yukine, the first Kanji of whose names mean "night" and "snow," respectively. All three names refer to a kind of "condition" the sky can be in.
  • Hiyori's surname, "Iki," means "I, one" ( () , i) and "branch off, fork in road, scene, arena, theater" ( () , ki).
  • Hiyori's character song is "Mitai Sekai" and was sung by her Japanese voice actress, Maaya Uchida.
  • Despite frequently falling asleep in classes,[11] Hiyori eventually catches up and even teaches lessons (and leaves homework) to Yukine, suggesting she is a good student.
  • Hiyori ignores the barrage of emails and tweets from Yato, but when Yukine borrows Yato's phone to send her a message, she'll answer every time.[19]
  • Akira Yamashita calls Hiyori's ability to slip out of her body her "insta-snooze" trick,[citation needed] since from her perspective, Hiyori only falls asleep.
  • Hiyori finds her ability to follow scents embarrassing.[20]
